What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal distorders and the effects these conditions have on patients’general health
Using many of the diagnostic procedures of conventional medical assissment, osteopaths then seek to restore the optimal functioning of the body, where possible without the use of drugs or surgery.  Focuses on strengthening the musculoskeletal systems to treat existing conditions and prevent illness.

Referral

Most patients self-refer to an osteopath for treatment.  Althought referral  by a GP is not necessary, patients are encouraged to keep both their GP and osteopath fully informed,so that their medical records are current and complete, and the patient receives the best possible care from each.

Treatment involves gentle, manual techniques –easing pain, reducing swelling and improving mobility
Osteopathy is based on viewing the body as a whole.  It relates how the body structures  function with each other within the whole system. Abnormal working patterns of the body (unique to each person) can cause pain and dysfunction

An osteopath assesses each patient’s individual  working pattern and by gentle manipulation of the bones and soft tissue structures, works to remove restrictions which may be affecting joint mobility, blood flow, nerve supply or muscular activity.
In doing this, dysfunction is reversed and pain alleviated.

Osteopathy is now an established form of medicine for addressing the body’s function, through its structure. In essence, this is sometimes described by my patients as “having their body back again”.

I aim to give people back their body in better working order.
